Flight International Reveals 100 Greatest in Aviation |
|
The Apollo 11 moon landing where Neil Armstrong first stepped on to the moon has topped a poll of the 100 Greatest in Aviation - revealed at a special 100th birthday ceremony for Flight International magazine held at the Farnborough Air Show in Hampshire last night [Tuesday 15th July]. |
The online campaign to find the top 100 greatest achievements ever known in aviation was run by Flight International's website Flightglobal.com in association with Bombardier to help celebrate the centenary year of publishing for the industry magazine.
Murdo Morrison, editor of Flight International magazine said: "We've had some really iconic aircraft and moments that have been nominated by thousands of Flightglobal.com readers and users, but the Apollo 11 landing was truly a golden age of mankind reaching new boundaries in science and technology.
"The 100 Greatest in Aviation campaign was to highlight the fantastic achievements in the industry over the past century and I think it's gone incredibly well," he added.
Second place went to the world's first wide-bodied airliner and most recognisable plane, the Boeing 747, No.3 to brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright and at No.4 supersonic airliner Concorde.
Aero engine, the Rolls-Royce Merlin made famous with its association with the Supermarine Spitfire in 1940 takes the No.5 spot while the military aircraft itself goes in at number six.
Other Greatest aviation moments, aircraft or people which made it into the list include the Airbus A380 in at No.12, Charles Lindbergh who completed the first solo transatlantic flight in at No.20 and Amelia Earhart at No.49.
The campaign launched in March this year attracted thousands of Flightglobal users including high profile personalities such as Virgin Galactic president Will Whitehorn who chose the 747 as his favourite aircraft and Formula One boss Sir Frank Williams who told Flightglobal that one of the greatest ever aircraft from the past century [in his opinion] is the jet-powered bomber, the B-52.
